Once the tax authorities process the income tax declaration, they make a decision regarding the amount of refund.

You can apply for a tax refund even if you worked for only a few months (temporary or seasonal employment contract).

In the Netherlands, you can reclaim overpaid taxes for the previous five years. This means that in 2026 you can submit a tax return for the years 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025. It is important to note that if the declaration is not submitted on time, you may lose the opportunity to recover overpaid amounts for older periods. We accept documents for 2021 until 01.12.2026, so we recommend submitting them as soon as possible to ensure a timely process.
