An individual who has worked in Belgium, earned income, and paid taxes is obligated to submit an annual income tax declaration. Income tax declaration reflects the income earned, taxes paid, and relevant deductions applied according to personal circumstances. Once the tax authorities process the income tax declaration, they make a decision regarding the amount of refund.
The tax refund amount depends on your income, taxes paid, tax system, duration of your work abroad, and other factors. To get an estimate of your potential refund, use our online calculator. It is important to note that the final refund amount is determined by the Belgian tax authorities, and only the overpaid income taxes can be refunded.
Receiving a tax refund does not affect your future eligibility for social benefits. Regardless of whether you received a tax refund, you still retain the right to work abroad, receive a pension, and access other social benefits.
You can apply for a tax refund even if you worked for only a few months (temporary or seasonal employment contract).
You will receive the money into the bank account you provided when registering for the tax refund. We use the services of Electronic Money Institution to ensure that the refunded money from the tax authorities is securely and quickly transferred to your designated bank account.
It depends on your individual situation. To find out if you need to submit a declaration, it's best to contact our specialists.

In Belgium, you can reclaim overpaid taxes for the previous three years. This means that in 2026 you can submit a tax return for the years 2023, 2024 and 2025. It is important to note that if the declaration is not submitted on time, you may lose the opportunity to recover overpaid amounts for older periods. We accept documents for 2023 until 01.12.2026, so we recommend submitting them as soon as possible to ensure a timely process.
