Income tax refund

An individual who has worked in the Sweden, received income, and paid taxes is advised to submit an annual income declaration. This declaration reflects the income received, taxes paid, and relevant deductions applied according to personal circumstances. Once the tax authorities process the declaration, they make a decision regarding the amount of overpaid or due taxes.

There are two tax systems in Sweden: a fixed 25% tax rate and the standard progressive system. For those using the fixed 25% tax rate, submitting a tax declaration is not necessary. However, after evaluating the income earned and taxes paid, individuals may choose to switch to the standard system, which allows them to file an annual tax declaration and potentially reclaim any overpaid taxes.

Important! Individuals working under the standard tax system must ensure that their annual income tax declaration is submitted and approved by the Swedish tax authorities by May. Failure to approve the declaration may result in a fine imposed by the tax authorities, ranging from 1,250 to 3,750 SEK, depending on the circumstances.

Documents required for the declaration:
